What is depo provera?

The birth control shot, also known as Depo ( short for depo provera ), keeps you from getting pregnant. It is an injection that you get from your doctor. Once you get it, your birth control is covered for 3 months.

Depo contains a hormone named progestin, that prevents your ovaries from releasing eggs. It’s a safe, convenient, and private birth control method that works well.

How does it work?

The shot ( sometimes called Depo-Provera, the Depo shot, or DMPA ) release a hormone that helps you to get pregnant by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg during the monthly cycle). When there is no egg in the tube then you can’t get pregnant.

The depo is a long-acting form of progestin hormone ( naturally manufactured in a girl’s ovaries ). It is an injection. You inject it in your upper arm or in your buttocks once every 3 months. It helps to protect the girl from becoming pregnant.

It also makes the mucus on the cervix thick, so that the sperm does not get through. And when the sperm and the egg not meet each other, pregnancy can’t happen.

How well does it work?

  • whether a person has any health conditions
  • the person taking any medications that might interfere with its use.

  • whether the person remembers to use it correctly all of the time.

According to a survey, over the course of 1 year, fewer than 3 out of 100 typical couples who use the birth control depo every 3 months will have an accidental pregnancy. The chance is increased to get pregnant if you wait longer than 3 months to receive your next shot.
