Sleep Twitch, also known as a hypnagogic jerk or a hypnic jerk, occurs when you are in between being awake and asleep. Hypnic jerks can be completely random or induced by certain triggers ( like – sound, light ). The jerks are common in children and are basically a senseless muscle spasm that occurs when you are drifting off to sleep.

How does a person feel at the time of jerk?

The experience of a hypnic jerk varies from person to person.

  • Some people feel only slightly and experience just one or two episodes before finally getting to sleep.
  • While some have suddenly jerking motions of the legs or whole body occurring at the moment of falling asleep.
  • In very few cases, at the jerk time, sleep twitch is accompanied by a scream or shout as his body reacts to the violent nature of this phenomena.

Why do you twitch in sleep?  

In the world, approx 70% of the people are suffered from hypnic jerks. Most people will experience this at least once in their lifetime.

There are many theories for why twitching in your sleep could occur, but little concrete evidence, including :

  • Some research suggests that sleep deprivation, and factors such as stress or anxiety, can increase the chances of having a hypnic jerk.
  • Some people report hypnagogic jerks occur due to exercise too late in the night.
  • A research says that the people with bad sleep habits do suffer from hypnic jerks.

What are the causes of hypnic jerks?

A hypnic jerk is neither a disease nor a nervous system disorder. Hypnic jerk does not sleep paralysis as well. In the jerk time, your heart starts beating very rapidly. Some people may have sweated in the process.At this time, your brain is in the hallucinating stage, so, you may also experience a sudden shock.

There is a wide range of potential causes of hypnic jerks, including anxiety, stress, caffeine, and strenuous activities in the night. However, most hypnic jerks occur essentially at random in healthy people.

Some common causes of hypnic jerks are including :

  1. Exhaustion
  2. Anxiety or stress issues
  3. Alcohol and caffeine
  4. Undergoing treatment or taking any kind of medication
  5. Sleep posture
